The studio is like a science lab where, with paint and paper, I can express myself fully and see what comes of the experiment. I have no concept in mind when I begin, only the intention of putting what I feel inside, outside. It is imperative that I do so honestly, without editing the unappealing. I work intuitively. I respond physically and emotionally to the materials and choose what feels accurate or true to my experience in the moment. Whatever I am experiencing reveals itself on paper or canvas and brings into consciousness that which abides deep within.
I know my art and creative process are metaphors for who I am and how I live. I encounter the same angels and demons, delights and fears while working in the studio as I do when out and about in the world; and I experience the same dynamics and patterns while creating art as I do in my relationships with others and all else.
The process is exciting, rewarding and, at times, frightening. I don't always like what I encounter, but through the work I hope to become more familiar, more understanding and more accepting of myself, of others, and of the world in which we live so that I can make conscious choices that are truly my own and hopefully wise.
The creative process does not begin and end in the studio. It is working continuously in each of us. We are creating ourselves, each other and the world in which we live with every thought, word and act.
